Learning Through Creativity, Technology, and Exploration

At HCS, students learn through hands-on experiences that encourage creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and curiosity across a variety of learning environments.

Learning Beyond the Traditional Classroom

Students often learn best when they are actively engaged.

Learning Labs at HCS provide spaces where students can build, experiment, create, explore, solve problems, and apply what they are learning in meaningful ways.

These experiences help students grow in curiosity, confidence, creativity, and critical thinking.

What Students Develop Through Hands-On Learning

Creative Thinking

Students are encouraged to imagine, design, experiment, and explore new ideas through creative projects and activities.

Problem-Solving Skills

Hands-on learning helps students think critically, test solutions, and work through challenges independently and collaboratively.

Technology Confidence

Students interact with technology in purposeful ways that help prepare them for future learning environments.

Technology as a Learning Tool

Technology at HCS is used to support learning, creativity, research, collaboration, and communication.

Students interact with technology in ways that help build digital confidence while supporting classroom instruction and academic growth.

Learning That Connects Across Disciplines

At HCS, creativity and exploration are not limited to one subject or one space. Students encounter meaningful hands-on learning through music, visual arts, the library, and beyond.

Ukulele

Music

From singing and rhythm in the early grades to ukulele, recorder, guitar, music production, and Worship Band in middle school, music instruction grows with every student. Students in the lower grades perform at a Christmas concert each December. Upper elementary students perform at a Spring concert. Middle school students can pursue music as a dedicated elective — including producing original tracks in a digital audio workstation or leading peers in Friday chapel worship through Worship Band.

Visual Arts

Students work with a wide range of mediums — watercolour, oil pastels, printmaking, collage, clay, and mixed media — building technical skill and creative confidence year after year. Each grade level studies influential artists from around the world and across history, including Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Kehinde Wiley, and Faith Ringgold. By middle school, students work with increasing independence, making their own creative choices and producing three-dimensional sculptural work.
